NEW FOUNDATION TO HELP LEARNING DISABLED
AND AUTISTIC CHILDREN

New York, NY - The non-profit WINS Foundation (We're Important, NOT Stupid) has been created to help in diagnosing and helping these children, who struggle daily with difficulties and everyday events. WINS was born out of first-hand experience involving Dr. Karen Purcell and her young son, Carl.

Carl was an extremely bright baby who could decipher the New York Times at the age of 6. He was identified as gifted at the beginning of elementary school; he even received a full tuition scholarship to a private school through grade 5. While in the fifth grade, Carl began to lose his concentration and focus.

Over the next 3 years, Carl's condition worsened. His mother tried a number of things including home-schooling. He was subjected to a battery of medical tests in which he was diagnosed with allergies, gastro-intestinal disorders, metal toxicity, depression, serious visual deficits and learning disabilities. His teachers labeled him "bright but lazy". Independent testing revealed that Carl was "learning disabled". Even though his teacher was aware of his diagnosis, Carl was given an "F" on a poem he had written. Not much assistance or any remedies were forthcoming, and Carl grew more frustrated. Dr. Purcell went into action. She submitted the same poem to a national poetry contest advertised in Writers Digest, and it won the Editor's Choice Award.

Being a Board Certified Naturopathic Physician & a Licensed Nutritionist, Dr. Purcell had successfully worked with learning disabled and ADD/ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactive disorder) children in her practice. She helps them to improve dramatically, while others have given up on them, and many of these afflicted children were on severe prescription drugs with dreadful side-effects. Dr. Purcell used the essential fatty acid testing made famous in the film "LORENZO'S OIL" to greatly improve Carl's visual, organizational, and cognitive functions.

Through this experience and to honor her son, Dr. Karen Purcell has founded WINS. WINS is committed to enlighten parents, families, physicians, and educators so that learning disabled children and teens can take their places among the best and the brightest. And without the use of drugs.
